Seeking Your Library Technology Quotes!

As part of the Emerging Library Technology workshop I am busy working on, I am humbly asking you for your library technology thoughts and quotes. You fine folks are the ones that know and use these tools and your ideas and thought could really be encouraging and/useful to many folks attending these workshops (and there will be many of these workshops in lots of states!).

Please (pretty please?) share your “Quotable Quotes” about any of the following:

Library Blogs
Library use of Wikis
Virtual Reference
Tagging
E-Learning
Gaming in Libraries
Wireless in Libraries
RFID in Libraries
Library use of VOIP
Community
Convergence
Web 2.0
Open WorldCat

Also if you have anything quotable to say about general Technology Trends in libraries I would really LOVE to hear, and possibly use them.

If you send me any and I use them in class I will definitely cite you and your blog/library in the workshop. Anonymous quotes work just fine too if you prefer! Both positive and negative thoughts are encouraged as well. Lots and lots of people are going to see this workshop, so why not be a part and get your name dropped in the process? :) Comment to this post directly or you send quotes to me directly via email: mp (at sign) libraryman.com

Thanks so much everybody! I?m really looking forward to what you all have to say!

We’ve set up six blogs at our public library - two for the public and four for staff. Of these, only one has great participation - the staff blog where everyone on the entire staff can posts comments about books they have read, movies or DVDs they watched, or music they’ve listened to. I think it’s so popular because I asked for staff interest prior to starting it and then personally e-mailed everyone on our support staff to invite them to participate. If you don’t get staff buy-in, then it is very hard to get group participation in comments or postings. I also linked an instruction page right to our Intranet so everyone has access to the URL and how to post. If we do additional blogs, this will certainly be a regular part of the process!

Nice! This is great! Thanks so much for the excellent comment, Kathy. I just sent you an email cheering you on (and asking a question too:). I love to hear about the learning process you experienced with your implementations. Good stuff.

Really? How about share that joke here? Sorry that I don’t have any quote either. Maybe you could give the workshop to people in Taipei as well, Michael?

A horse walks into a bar and the bartender says: “Why the long face?”

I would be great to come and teach this workshop in Taiwan! We have a fee schedule for this type of training, which actually does happen on occasion. Of course the travel costs might be a little bit much. Yikes!

Beyond the scheduled workshops we have planned, I’ll be doing several special single institution training sessions like this over the next several months. The only difference really is that they are in California or Washington or Oregon and you are in Taiwan.

cj: That is one trippy MP3 player. I had it on preorder you know. Then decided not to order one right now. Counting pennies and what not, you know how that goes.

LOL, thanks for the joke. What does a “long face” mean in the American culture? For us, if we say “a horse doesn’t know it has a long face” to someone, we mean that person is very brazen. :)
One of my colleague is a Director of the library commitee of the Library Association of R.O.C.(Republic of China=Taiwan). Maybe you want to get in touch with them? :D
    Cheers

Here’s a quote from my blog Library Geek Woes in reference to a post about Web 2.0:

The Internet has changed the landscape of community. Now there are no physical boundaries, but one still has to make an effort if one wants to move there. It’s obvious that libraries aren’t especially anxious to call the moving truck and, in many cases, can’t even afford the movers. What happens when libraries are left behind?

  12. Michael Porteron 04 Nov 2005 at 12:17 pm

Totally. Exactly! That’s why the workshop is called “Keep Up!”. Thanks very much, Laura!
