Kottke's post is interesting, and I agree that those concerns are valid in many ways. However, the open nature of much of this sort of work/activity/community may keep the whole AOL thing/theory from becoming true. That and the whole AOL story itself being a part of the motivation to keep things as open as possible...

I guess I see it like this; facebook has one architecture, but they don't control the concept. The *concept* of opening functionality is what gets me excited, not a particular brand (tough props to facebook for getting it straight "their way" with a solid *proof* of concept, and for being in the market's face very effectively).

Interesting. Your posts convince me that I have to catch up on this Facebook thing (sigh -- too much!). Have you seen this post on the drawbacks of this model? He argues that programming platforms for every social networking site will create a buttload of work for organizations, including libraries, trying to connect with their respective audiences. He also likens it to the walled garden approach that AOL and compuserve tried to implement back in the 90's.

Great presentation! Thanks for putting the time and effort into creating it and sharing it with everyone. The BIGWIG project is such a great idea. Wish I could be in DC, but having these presentations online is the next best thing.

I've been enjoying the 'new' facebook. Am going to look at the developers platform now and see what kind of trouble I might be able to get into!

Have fun in DC.
