The Libraries and Librarians Guild in Wow -the Largest On-line MMORPG Game in the World
World of Warcraft is the largest “Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game” in the world. It has 10 million plus subscribers and is, in addition to being a blast and a lovely distraction, gloriously fun and addictive to many. And now, finally, WE (Libraries and Librarians) have a guild. If you play WoW and work in, for, or with Libraryland, you can now join the Libraries and Librarians Guild. We are new, but we already have a substantial Guild web site complete with a forum (very good in Wow-land). And a bank. In fact, we have a bank with three tabs and daily pulls for repairs (that is also quite good in WoW-land). Heck we even have an optional free (to you) Guild tabard (sort of like a t-shirt you wear in the game).

And even without much of an official roll out, as of yesterday we already have a nice collection of members. In fact, just yesterday I took a happy little screen shot of our first Guild chat ever:

So if you play Wow and have wanted to play with other library professionals, this could be the place for you. And if you have never played a gigantic on-line game, this may be the best opportunity you’ve ever had to give it a whirl. You’ll have to download the game to your PC or Mac (and have a machine that is powerful enough to play the game of course). And yes, there is a learning curve. But once you catch on, and you have a posse of friends to help you along (aka a Guild like ours) you may very well find yourself understanding more vividly then you might have ever imagined just what all this “Gaming and Libraries” talk is all about.
So join us! We’ll be there waiting to show you the ropes…and chat…and kill bad guys! Along the way, you’ll likely grok the whole online community/gaming/libraries thing just a little bit more, and have a blast while you’re at it. In fact, consider this your invitation to do exactly that!
Note: If you want to join this guild you must be on the Aerie Peak -US server. If you are a new player be sure to pick that server! Also, if you are creating a toon (new character) or transferring an existing character to join this guild, be sure you put it on this server (Aerie Peak - US)!!!
Thanks and see you soon in WoWland!

This might be the last incentive I need to give WoW a try. Last month I visited my brother and he and his wife had to excuse themselves as they needed to go on a raid with their guild (I watched them play). WoW was also how my brother stayed in touch with his closest friend when they lived overseas from each other.
Always wanted to try but I suck at video games.
Jen, WoW is both simple and complicated. There is a lot of experimentation as you play and even if you aren’t so great at games generally, you can still achieve quite a lot and have a blast along the way. But of course I would say that, right?
*shudders* It’s an ALLIANCE guild. *sighs*

Ok. I was very excited to hear about this guild and did my application to join, and created a new toon in Aerie Peak, and …….nothing. No response. No reply. There is very little activity in the website, which is actually ok, cause its much more important to hav eit in the game, but ….where r u guys?
This is probably gonna aggravate people, but it
s this very lack of action that i hated about the library world. 25 years of waiting..
I like WOW cause its an action kind of thing. And its fun. The social redeeming qualities…not sure. But I have encountered interesting people. and did i say its fun?
Hey Aphrodesiac,
I’m sorry you haven’t been able to get in yet! There are just a few folks that can let people in I’m realizing I haven’t put that info up clearly enough on the site. I am usually on more, but in the last 3 weeks traveled to and presented in NE and KS and also launched the new WebJunction site…. So, that meant much less wow time.
However, we want you there with us! If you send me an email we can pick a time to meet in game and I’ll let you in and give you your welcome gifts too.
email me at michael.libraryman*at sign****gmail. com k?
Sorry it was hard thus far, but we’ll get you in and rollin’ along!
it would be better with other languages support, but thanks..
Things have been chugging along very well and we are now expanding into Horde territory! Read on:
You may have heard that library staff (and their families/significant others/loved ones) are having an increasingly strong presence in the game World of Warcraft. With 11 million players (willing to pay $15 dollars a month btw, so there really *must* be something going on there, eh?), it would make sense that Libraries and Librarians be represented and join together at times. And the Libraries and Librarians Guild is a great way to do just that (more info on getting started with that Guild can be found here). It is a friendly, helpful and fairly wealthy guild that is just for libraries and librarians!
But up until now the “Libraries and Librarians” Guild was only an Alliance Guild (there are two sides or “factions” in WoW; Alliance and Horde). The Libraries and Librarians Guild is on the Alliance side. The thing is, lots of library staff like to play the different characters and lands available only on the Horde side. So now that our Alliance Guild is well established and humming along nicely, we are going to start up a Horde guild for Library staff. And we are doing it in a way that maximizes our Library centric community in WoW. That means we are starting the guild on the same server (Aerie Peak) as our Alliance Guild. There are many benefits to this, but basically it will help the guild get more members and wealth while giving us rare and uniqe opportunity to partner and get things done across what are traditionally “enemy” lines. Pretty cool, eh? Talk about partnership and community. Hey, that sound like something libraries excel at!
So, just to review, our Alliance guild is “Libraries and Librarians” and it is on the Aerie Peak server. Our new Horde Guild is “LibrariesandLibrarians” (can’t have the same guild name twice on a single server) and it now forming on the Aerie Peak server as well.
I’ll be logged on to Aerie Peak on the Horde side with my character “Libstauren” on the Horde side of Aerie Peak tonight at 5pm PST/8pmEST and 8pm PST/11pmEST. I’ll mostly be in Orgrimmar (a Horde Capital City). I will try to be on these times for the next four days as well. If you want to join us you are both invited and very welcome. Just a not on our server, “Aerie Peak”. Sometimes you can’t get on the server because it is full. But open slots come up all the time with great regularity. It appears that most will have little trouble creating a character (Horde or Alliance) on Aerie Peak, but if you have trouble gettin in, please be patient. You will be able to get on as slots open up all the time. It is worth if because, again, we are putting both an Alliance and Horde on the same server for strategic and reward reasons.
