David and Michael asked some widely known and respected folks in Libraryland to talk about what they see changing in libraries and what we need to be doing to ensure we remain relevant as technology and society evolve. And these folks have some VERY interesting things to say! Check out the essays below.

I got the following story second hand, but you can check it for accuracy. If it is true, Bill would be a great interviewee.

Bill Gates enjoyed being a library aide in school. However, he moved to a new school, and asked to be a library aide. He was turned down, because he was a guy. So, he convinced his parents to move him back to his old school, so he could return to working in the school’s library. This is why Bill Gates contributes to education.

Hi Matt, I actually worked in the Gates Foundation US Library Program and also the Native American Access Technology Program at the Gates Foundation for several years, and heard similar versions of that story. I was able to meet him *very* briefly, but didn’t use that time to clarify that story, though I should poke around on the interwebs and see what I can find. I can verify that libraries are a high priority for Bill, Melinda and Bill Gates Sr. and many others at BMGF. We nearly had an essay from someone there for launch, so it is kind of cool that you mentioned this. :)

Cathy, oh man, what a great idea! I wonder if she would have responded? We are learning all kinds of things working on this project and your idea is sure something I wish we would have thought of before launch. We’re trying to decide about how to do a second round of essays. You think we should do that, or try to get her involved with the next project maybe?

Your video was about 6 and a half minutes too long.

  17. Libraryman on 06 Nov 2009 at 6:35 pm

Megan, Sorry you thought it was too long. You certainly aren’t alone in thinking that, and to be honest, David and I knew that before we launched. We have said in several place online that this video (and the ones before and after it) is a giant learning experiment. All we can say is that we did our very best and are glad that most folks seem to enjoy it. And, even some of the folks that enjoyed it despite its length ;) will be glad to know that the next video project will definitely be much shorter and less complicated.

One last point on length..when you have over 600 submitted or gathered images of library staff that want to be a part of your video, its hard to not have a long video. We could have done a better job in some ways, we know, but we really tried incredibly hard to do our best.

Also, I take full responsibility for adding length (and complexity) to the video by insisting on the two bridges in the song (the punk section and the “boy band” section). Those were my ideas, I lead the music changes on those two parts and if they detract at all from the project at all, I take full responsibility for them.

But still, having said that, David and I, and the majority of people that see the video and hear the song are liking it for the most part. It is not perfect, that is for sure, but it is not so bad either. And some people, even in all of its seven minute glory, actually love it just the way it is.

Either way we are learning from the feedback and are grateful for constructive criticism. So thanks!
